Would You Pass the Acid Test?

Right, on with the white coats and goggles ...... but before you think about whether you’d pass or not, let’s have a look at how my guinea pig businessman gets on with the test:

It is important to note that no businessman’s feelings were hurt in the making of this film! And that full permission was given!
Experiment: 1A

First mute the speaker icon and look at what his body is up to:

  • He is signalling his distress by shifting his weight from foot to foot.
  • He doesn’t look grounded (which strips him of authority)
  • His posture is generally good but the slight slump onto his hips ages him and saps some vitality
  • He has almost no connection with his audience – because he’s too tied to his notes
  • His right arm is tense and his nervous energy leaks out of his twitching hand (all the energy that he should be using in his performance)

Imagine that you’d walked into a room where this man was on a TV screen and the sound was turned down – would you be bothered to pick up the remote and turn the sound up on him?

And more crucially...

Supposing someone walked into a room where YOU were on a TV screen and the sound was turned down – would they be bothered to pick up the remote and turn the sound up on you?

Would your body language be compelling enough? Would you look so involved and interested in what you were saying that the viewers couldn’t resist finding out what you were talking about?

Now try our gentleman again with the sound up.

Well yes, that helps because we realise that his voice is firmer than we suspected it would be. He has clear diction and he is putting some emphasis on some key words so that helps hugely – but is he really feeling the words he is speaking? Or is the emphasis mechanical with nothing behind it? Note, too, those little coughs, signalling not only his feeling of awkwardness but that his breathing is out of his control.

Experiment: 1B

Let’s see how he fares here when he’s asked to put down his notes.

Well, there’s a marked improvement, isn’t there?

  • The hand that is now free is able to gesture and look more normal
  • Note though how the gesture is restricted and ‘zipped down’ as if he is keeping control of himself
  • There is some increase of energy and emphasis on key words
  • But we soon realise that he is wedded to his script and that is where his focus is rather than with the all important audience.
